Informative Content Is King For Your Website

When it comes to affiliate marketing, one of the best tools is a blog. Blogging gives you the ability to write about anything you would like. There are almost no topics that can’t be blogged about online, therefore there is an almost limitless number of ways to convert a blog into an affiliate marketing website.  Or so I thought. You must understand that informative content is king for your website.

When I first started blogging I wrote about daily routines and generalized topics which did not do much to earn me money. In fact, getting people to visit my website was slow going. Some of my posts, however, were getting a disproprtionately high number of organic vistors. Being curious, I went back to those posts to check the topics of those posts. I noticed that they were posts heavy in direct text. In other words, heavy in content that was useful to the vistor. Many of my posts are longer as far as content goes but these ones were getting more traffic so there must have been something good about them.

I got my first lesson in website traffic and what the reason for the traffic was. People want to have their questions answered in depth. It took me almost a year before I realized how to analyze my blogs traffic. Now that I know how to use my vistor traffic to learn what my vistors want, I can give them more of what they want.  They want good content.

Content is king, but only when it is useful. I can write a 3000 word post, but if it doesn’t make the vistor read the whole post before clicking the back button, it is useless. At first I though my blog was doing poorly because it was too scattered. The reality is that most posts were just not informative. From that point on I decided to focus more on my writing. I used google analytics to see what search phrases brought people to my blog and whether my blog satisfied their search. In most cases my posts did not give the visitor the information they wanted but it gave me the abilty to put that information in upcoming posts.

Providing useful information is the key to driving traffic to your website. The easiest way to provide useful information is to write good content. No matter the subject matter of your content, you have to go into detail. Writing about topics you like and are very knowledgeable about is how you provide that content. It’s not easy to inform people if you don’t have any knowledge of a particular topic so write about what you know and love.

Simply liking a topic is not enough. You have to have a passion for what you write about, otherwise you will hit a brick wall of content creativity.

Creavitive, unique, useful, informative and purposeful content is king. You can’t just inform the reader. You have to have unique information within your content. If you have a blog about weight loss, check other blogs with the same topic and see what is being written there. Can you offer better content? Can you add more information with your content? Is your content the same as other blogs?

No matter the topic of your blog, chances are there will be well established blogs already existing for that topic. Competition exists for every possible topic but quality is not common. This gives you an opportunity to write top quality content. Even some of the most popular blogs have not covered everything that they can within their topic. You can provide the information they missed with your content.

I have some posts that are about very common topics but get better search results than  more popular blogs on the subject. Even though my blog may not be as popular as those blogs, I still provide content that they don’t with some of my posts. Well written content makes vistors want to read your other content, even off topic content. Like I said earlier though, you can’t just write about anything. You must like your topic at worst, love it at best.

I noticed that the posts that were getting the most traffic, were also the posts I was passionate about. Your passion and knowledge of a subject will show up in your content. Vistors will be able to sense your knowledge through your content. Conversely, your visitors will be able to sense your lack of knowledge and passion with bad content. I’ve been there.

I have also discovered that people will stay on a not so pretty looking website if the content is good. Visitors will deal with an ugly website if it provides better content than a better looking website. That must mean content is king.

The more to-the-point your content is, the more people will read other posts on your blog. The purpose of my content on this website is to point out the mistakes I made creating my first website. Every mistake I make with my other website creates content for this website.

My first mistake as an aspiring internet professional was underestimating the importance of informative content. Without informative content, visitors do not return to your website. In fact, most visitors will just click the back button before they finish reading your post.

I wasted almost a year providing information that no one was reading because it was too basic. It’s easier for the vistor to click the back button and find another website with better content. Put as much information in your posts as possible and don’t be afraid to update posts even if they are a year old.

Updating your content is easy to do but it takes time. I set aside a whole month just to read my old posts and update when  necessary. Updating your content a couple of times per year keeps your content evergreen in some cases, in other cases your content may be time restrictive. Everytime I write a new post I ask myself “how long will this post be useful for” before I make it public. Content that is useful for years to come is called, evergreen content. I now try to make all my posts evergreen, but sometimes the information is only relevent at the time it was written. Even if the content is only relevent for a short period of time, try to be the one who provides the most information at that time.

In a world of websites competing for visitors the best way to improve your website traffic is through informative content. Every blog has the ability to provide more and more information in its content with each new post. Before you publish your next post do a search for some of its keywords and see what has been written about the subject already. Edit your post to include information missing from the current content already posted on the subject and click publish when you are satisfied. Be sure not to copy anyone’s content. Be original and write in an easy going tone.
